David the Goat
By proceeding along the east wall, you will find yourself at the casemate under the East Stairs, reserved for the Fort Henry Guard's goat mascot, David IX. The Guard has a mascot in memory of the mascot of the 23rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Welch Fusiliers), stationed at Fort Henry in 1842 and 1843, which was a goat named "Billy." To commemorate this regiment and their mascot, the Saint David Society of Toronto has donated a total of nine white Saanen goats to Fort Henry since 1953; the current goat is therefore "David IX". David IX can be met on his daily walkabouts, and seen in the shows and parades put on by the Fort Henry Guard.
